Kill Me Baby 01
We're teaming up with UTW again for this season's anime:
Kill Me Baby!
It's based on a 4-koma about a normal girl, an assassin, and a ninja. As you may have guessed from the picture, it's a comedy. And it is hilarious. Enjoy!
Episode 1 (10 bit) and 480p (8 bit, mp4)
Yep, 10 bit. If you have problems playing it, uninstall whatever codecs you're using and install the latest version of CCCP. We've also dropped the xvid codec entirely and switched to the mp4 container as our de facto low res release.
By the way, in case you missed it, we recently translated Tsuki no Sango (Coral of the Moon), by Nasu. Give it a read if you enjoy his other works.

uh.. is that Sanzenin Nagi on the right? :)
Thank you for being willing to pick up a show this season. Life isn't the same without a weekly Mazui fix.

I really hope the Developer will add the Hi10p to her hardware-decoding libaries.
Until yet, it seems only softw. encoder are able to decode this stuff without building blocks and mess the color.
Hmm somehow I'm thinking back again to what I said, I always looked down on XviD releases due to their terrible quality when upscaled, but H264 shouldn't be that bad when upscaled (Even at 720p screen). But yeah I watch some of SD encodes coughminitheatredotorgcough, I just make sure they are watchable and not an eye cancer
Please please please PLEASE continue with the 8-bit 720p releases - as mentioned by Oral-B above, those of us with media boxes (ex. my Western Digital Live HD box) will *never* get support for 10-bit encodings! :(
I don't understand this obsession that fansub groups have with using 10-bit. You deliberately break compatibility and cause problems for lots of people and for what? A few less megabytes in file size? Is that really worth it?? Please think about what you're doing.
And please stop replying to all format complaints with "use CCCP". Not everyone uses a Windows PC to watch their anime, and even if they do they might want to use XBMC. By refusing to even consider non-CCCP options you are just pulling a big "screw you" to everyone above. Not cool.
It isn't, of course, unwatchable. Just giving a bit of feedback.
There are two purposes for 10bit in the fansubbing world. The first is better color (quality). Yes, all displays are 8 bit, but encoding it in 10 and having your codecs downsample to 8 produces demonstrably better quality than 8 bit. This leads to the second reason: size. The raw for this episode was 200MB. That's the same size as most of our XviD releases. 10 bit is a conscious step away from the ridiculous file bloating that's been plaguing fansubbing over the last few years.
I'm sorry if your setup can't support 10 bit. Moving to a new technology is always going to feel like we're screwing over the minority, but I really think the pros outweigh the cons. With our LQ releases moving to h.264 and 480p, I think you'll still be able to enjoy our releases without a huge hit in quality.

I'm no video encoding specialist, but I can tell that this doesn't make much sense. Upscaling a source material to a higher format then downscaling it back to the original format can't possibly make it any better. Especially when working with soft subs which allow you to re-use the raw content verbatim.

Why are you so obsessed with such small file size differences? BitTorrent distribution makes this a non-issue.

I think you are wrong to think that people who use either XBMC, media boxes, or computers too slow for software 720p 10-bit decoding (because yes, 10-bit also takes away everyone's hardware H.264 decoding as well) represent only a minority small enough that it can be dismissed so easily.

No, being downscaled to 480p *is* a huge hit in quality.

Read these or pretty much anything Daiz has ever posted on /a/
> Why are you so obsessed with such small file size differences?
Better quality for a lower filesize. You'd have to be an idiot to not appreciate that.

There's no point in catering to idiots. It's your fault if you bought some piece of shit hardware player that relies on some company to provide firmware updates. Build a HTPC if you're desperate to watch moe moe cartoons on your TV. And if your computer seriously can't play 10bit 720p, you've got much bigger problems. My 2ghz dual core laptop can play ANE's 10bit 1080p Bakemonogatari.
> No, being downscaled to 480p *is* a huge hit in quality.
Deal with it. Go download a share raw and mux the script or something.
tl;dr stop denying the rest of us from the best possible quality simple because you cannot be arsed to upgrade your hamster powered 1/2 core PC, or because you can't play your animu on some shiny plastic box.
Read this paper on the technical reasons why it works: http://x264.nl/x264/10bit_02-ateme-why_does_10bit_save_bandwidth.pdf
There are comparisons everywhere that you can find with a quick google, but here's one that demonstrates how much better it is: http://screenshotcomparison.com/comparison/66317
We had some 400MB+ releases for haganai. Cutting that down by 50% is hardly a small difference. Not everyone has unlimited bandwidth or hard drive space.
People who can software decode 8bit 720 can handle 10bit 720 perfectly fine unless their cpu was on the verge of barely able to handle it at 100% to begin with. The additional overhead at 720 is minimal. Also, people on the edge of the performance boundary can always install CoreAVC 3 to get significant framerate gains.
Which leaves just the media box/PS3 users. No matter what you think, there just aren't that many who fall into this category. And at 8 feet back from a TV, is the difference between these two really that jarring?

With XBMC Eden coming out soon it looks likely that 10-bit decoding will be integrated into the XBMC trunk sometime in the next few months - maybe in time for the next season. Whether or not my E2140-based HTPC will be capable of software-decoded 10-bit 720p will then be the question (it should so long as XBMC also manages to use the ffmpeg multithreaded capabilities).
Last season I just resigned myself to transcoding nearly everything to 8-bit at CRF 20 (with Handbrake) and very high quality settings. My i7 860 transcoded at approx 30FPS, generally producing files at the same or smaller size as the 10-bit encodes, with SSIM of >0.993 in most cases. That's much much less distinguishable than the difference between 480p and 720p.

If the source have banding then the encode will have it too, unless you don't use filters. This demonstration is not correct.

You forgeting mobile users who watch anime on tablets and netbooks.
Tablets can only decode with hardware support.
Some netbooks can decode 10bit source using software decoding but it noticebly decreasing battery life.
> We had some 400MB+ releases for haganai.
If you want to decrease the file size you can encode OP and ED with different crf quality. And why you encode with crf=18? 19-20 would be enough i think.
Anyway who cares about the file size for ongoing? If you like a series then you will download BD rip with bigger file size than TV rip anyway.
You are still leaving out XBMC, which is the most popular player used in HTPCs. Hardly insignificant.
The CPU decoding difference between 8-bit and 10-bit can be very significant in cases where 8-bit was hardware decoded.
And yes, there is a significant difference between 480p and 720p on my 46 inch 1080p TV. Hell even with my previous TV (27 inch) it was still noticeable.
@RS
Your blabbering ad hominem attacks are hilarious. You are so cute. Come back when you have anything smart to say.
But i downloaded kill me baby and i was happy once again thank you staff of mazui =^_^=

Took me 1 second to search on Nyaa.
it's ur own stupidness to bought some idiot hardware player....
can't play smoothly with ur HTPC? USE MPLAYER2, fuck!
but then i DLed the k-lite codec pack. now here's the kicker: all the 10-nit stuff will play fin on wmp but wont play on VLC. weird. however, I'm not complaining. i can enjoy 10-bit now (on wmp) and continue to watch these rather AWESOME subs from mazui!. THANKS AS ALWAYS, KEEP ON ROCKIN', MAZUI!
I would like to suggest to sub this when it comes out on DVD/BDs: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=8qomwjPIerM

Who doesn't have unlimited bandwidth or hard drive space, doesn't have fast enough computer for 10bit to begin with. New hard drive is much cheaper than new PC.
I'm not sure why.
As always: Thanks, Mazui.
========
who's force u to buy new computer? use ur brain a little, u donkey.
dual-core processor still can play 720p 10-bit video
support latest version of CCCP. Can't we go back to old simple days?
what do you mean? Did u use Win 98?
use mplayer2, dude. http://mplayer2.srsfckn.biz/
and use it as default player for .mkv
and u have to remember some shortcut when using it. find help in smplayer
Thanks for subz anyway~
Hilarious animu :D
i'm playing the file just fine on a acer travelmate 2350 (7yo laptop, win xp, celeron m 1.5ghz, 512mb ram, using a recent mpc-hc and ffdshow tryouts release)
I don't have problem playing 10bit, I am against releasing only in 10bit. It's too early for burying 8bit.
@shin
How about netbooks or already mentioned tablet PC? EeePC 701 can't handle even 8bit 720.
Unfortunately, Kill Me Baby didn't get a single laugh out of me. That's a bad sign for a show that's meant to be purely comedy. If that doesn't change in the next episode or two it'll end up dropped.
Thanks regardless
- any news? :D

It's a shame that Mazui isn't but this is a way to get your 8bit anime fix.
Yes it would be possible hook a real PC up to my display, but I'll just take the 3 minutes to reencode the file. Quality looks about the same and file size dropped from 220MB to 215MB.
If you like watching anime on a little display as your computer fan is whirling have fun. I'll watch on my silent HTPC outputting to a projector with a 120" screen.
Yeah, okay, whatever. 10bit played perfectly before, but I decided to get latest CCCP for the sake of being up to date, and now, BLACK SCREEN, so thanks a lot for that. How the hell do i fix it.
Why don't you use K-Lite?
VLC still sucks with 10-bit.
