Kill Me Baby 01

We're teaming up with UTW again for this season's anime:

Kill Me Baby!

It's based on a 4-koma about a normal girl, an assassin, and a ninja. As you may have guessed from the picture, it's a comedy. And it is hilarious. Enjoy!

Episode 1 (10 bit) and 480p (8 bit, mp4)

Yep, 10 bit. If you have problems playing it, uninstall whatever codecs you're using and install the latest version of CCCP. We've also dropped the xvid codec entirely and switched to the mp4 container as our de facto low res release.

By the way, in case you missed it, we recently translated Tsuki no Sango (Coral of the Moon), by Nasu. Give it a read if you enjoy his other works.

yuyuyuyui remember reading a bit of the manga for this a long time ago, it's not bad :)
Gustus_MackI've got the software, the problem is the hardware. Single core Windows notebooks are widespread (this model is still sold new) and can't do hi10P. But it can do 720p 8-bit which looks great. Why not offer 8-bit 720p for real compatibility with the fanbase that's been using it for years?
10bitgoodieThank you Mazui. You guys always rock!
uh.. is that Sanzenin Nagi on the right? :)

a very poor personThank you for serving us poorfags for so long, XviD. May you rest in peace.
Dark_PrideThanks for doing SD releases!
Dark_PrideEDIT 2: Sorry for double post, but what if this was simulcasted by CR/Sentai? Are you going to drop this? CR haven't finished their announcement yet and Sentai has a strong connection w/ TBS.

PapaGeorgioHappy New Year.

Thank you for being willing to pick up a show this season. Life isn't the same without a weekly Mazui fix.

ninjaThis anime is awesome, great job on sub.
Someone ElseI wish you could have dropped 480p releases itself and just released 10bit and 8bit 720p instead -_-
netscoutThanks, Mazui!
I really hope the Developer will add the Hi10p to her hardware-decoding libaries.
Until yet, it seems only softw. encoder are able to decode this stuff without building blocks and mess the color.
@ Someone ElseHow about NO!
Dark_PrideThe reason for SD releases is for compatibility purposes. Not everyone can play 720p 8bit without lagging. The purpose of compatibility releases is for everyone (regardless of computer specs) to be able to watch it. If you're downloading SD releases, maybe you shouldn't be nitpicking about quality. 480p isn't really that unwatchable anyway, unless you're a videophile (who looks down upon SD releases, anyway).
Someone Else@Dark_Pride

Hmm somehow I'm thinking back again to what I said, I always looked down on XviD releases due to their terrible quality when upscaled, but H264 shouldn't be that bad when upscaled (Even at 720p screen). But yeah I watch some of SD encodes coughminitheatredotorgcough, I just make sure they are watchable and not an eye cancer
mazui fanboythanks for subbing this show :3
10-bit loverThanks for releasing this in 10 bit. I think it's about time people start accepting the 10-bit format.
Oral-BI get all the arguments about 10-bit when playing on a computer, but those of us who prefer to watch their anime on a big screen TV hooked to a XBMC nettop HTPC are f*cked since 10-bit is unsupported by the hardware usually found in those boxes (and will likely remain so for years to come since 10-bit is pretty much only used in the anime scene). How about adding 720p 8-bit for us nettop users?
ShadowIt's tough to rage, or demand, or whine about something "free-to-me" that doesn't work for me, so I'll try begging instead. :)

Please please please PLEASE continue with the 8-bit 720p releases - as mentioned by Oral-B above, those of us with media boxes (ex. my Western Digital Live HD box) will *never* get support for 10-bit encodings! :(
TorontianI promised myself to watch everything that Mazui subs, and this is no exception, i love everything you guys do keep up the good work. Best fansubbers around for sure.
SRUntil 10-bit displays become common it makes no sense to use 10-bit format. XBMC does not support it and the devs have declared that they have no current plans to do so, because it is a pointless format for now.

I don't understand this obsession that fansub groups have with using 10-bit. You deliberately break compatibility and cause problems for lots of people and for what? A few less megabytes in file size? Is that really worth it?? Please think about what you're doing.

And please stop replying to all format complaints with "use CCCP". Not everyone uses a Windows PC to watch their anime, and even if they do they might want to use XBMC. By refusing to even consider non-CCCP options you are just pulling a big "screw you" to everyone above. Not cool.
Lawl LawlsworthThe MP4 file doesn't appear to be properly encoded. There are lots of blocky segments [more so than a regular 480 rip], and fragments of previous scenes where left at least a couple of times. At first, I thought this was a problem with my computer, since I'd just updated my CCCP before watching, but I tested some other files and they played fine.

It isn't, of course, unwatchable. Just giving a bit of feedback.
Lawl Lawlsworth*were left
Ulrezaj@Lawl You're right, I'm looking into it.

There are two purposes for 10bit in the fansubbing world. The first is better color (quality). Yes, all displays are 8 bit, but encoding it in 10 and having your codecs downsample to 8 produces demonstrably better quality than 8 bit. This leads to the second reason: size. The raw for this episode was 200MB. That's the same size as most of our XviD releases. 10 bit is a conscious step away from the ridiculous file bloating that's been plaguing fansubbing over the last few years.

I'm sorry if your setup can't support 10 bit. Moving to a new technology is always going to feel like we're screwing over the minority, but I really think the pros outweigh the cons. With our LQ releases moving to h.264 and 480p, I think you'll still be able to enjoy our releases without a huge hit in quality.
nyucan someone explain to me what the 8 bit and 10 bit means ive only started seeing them recently
Anifannever really noticed the transition and just started downloading the 10-bit since my logic was "its a whole extra 2 bit", just wondering that if people have issues, isnt there freeware that can, lets say re-encode the video for themselves? - i sometimes use "Xvid4PSP" - although i wouldnt have a clue about downscaling a 10bit to an 8bit :/ or whether the subs will transfer over to the .avi (should someone want to convert the mkv to a avi [avi = dead to me])
kuronekoI can get the video to play but the subtitles fail to show up... even the option subtitles is grey and unclickable any ideas on ho to fix this??
cuck-cooi torrented the 720p one and all i'm getting is green video. and the subtitles only show up when i pause. Is there any fix to this?
SR@Ulrezaj

> There are two purposes for 10bit in the fansubbing world. The first is better color (quality). Yes, all displays are 8 bit, but encoding it in 10 and having your codecs downsample to 8 produces demonstrably better quality than 8 bit.
I'm no video encoding specialist, but I can tell that this doesn't make much sense. Upscaling a source material to a higher format then downscaling it back to the original format can't possibly make it any better. Especially when working with soft subs which allow you to re-use the raw content verbatim.

> This leads to the second reason: size. The raw for this episode was 200MB. That's the same size as most of our XviD releases. 10 bit is a conscious step away from the ridiculous file bloating that's been plaguing fansubbing over the last few years.
Why are you so obsessed with such small file size differences? BitTorrent distribution makes this a non-issue.

> I'm sorry if your setup can't support 10 bit. Moving to a new technology is always going to feel like we're screwing over the minority, but I really think the pros outweigh the cons.
I think you are wrong to think that people who use either XBMC, media boxes, or computers too slow for software 720p 10-bit decoding (because yes, 10-bit also takes away everyone's hardware H.264 decoding as well) represent only a minority small enough that it can be dismissed so easily.

> With our LQ releases moving to h.264 and 480p, I think you'll still be able to enjoy our releases without a huge hit in quality.
No, being downscaled to 480p *is* a huge hit in quality.

> Why are you so obsessed with such small file size differences?
Better quality for a lower filesize. You'd have to be an idiot to not appreciate that.

> I think you are wrong to think that people who use either XBMC, media boxes, or computers too slow for software 720p 10-bit decoding (because yes, 10-bit also takes away everyone's hardware H.264 decoding as well) represent only a minority small enough that it can be dismissed so easily.
There's no point in catering to idiots. It's your fault if you bought some piece of shit hardware player that relies on some company to provide firmware updates. Build a HTPC if you're desperate to watch moe moe cartoons on your TV. And if your computer seriously can't play 10bit 720p, you've got much bigger problems. My 2ghz dual core laptop can play ANE's 10bit 1080p Bakemonogatari.

> No, being downscaled to 480p *is* a huge hit in quality.
Deal with it. Go download a share raw and mux the script or something.

tl;dr stop denying the rest of us from the best possible quality simple because you cannot be arsed to upgrade your hamster powered 1/2 core PC, or because you can't play your animu on some shiny plastic box.
GakupoidThanks Mazui, now I have one reason to watch this series. Because its you who sub it :p
UlrezajIt doesn't make sense to you precisely because you're not an encoding specialist :)
Read this paper on the technical reasons why it works: http://x264.nl/x264/10bit_02-ateme-why_does_10bit_save_bandwidth.pdf
There are comparisons everywhere that you can find with a quick google, but here's one that demonstrates how much better it is: http://screenshotcomparison.com/comparison/66317

We had some 400MB+ releases for haganai. Cutting that down by 50% is hardly a small difference. Not everyone has unlimited bandwidth or hard drive space.

People who can software decode 8bit 720 can handle 10bit 720 perfectly fine unless their cpu was on the verge of barely able to handle it at 100% to begin with. The additional overhead at 720 is minimal. Also, people on the edge of the performance boundary can always install CoreAVC 3 to get significant framerate gains.

Which leaves just the media box/PS3 users. No matter what you think, there just aren't that many who fall into this category. And at 8 feet back from a TV, is the difference between these two really that jarring?
http://i.imgur.com/ytS0b.jpg
http://i.imgur.com/v7tTg.jpg
Tim@Ulrezaj yes, the difference is very significant - when in motion. I can easily see the difference between 720p and 480p on my 32" screen at approx 1.5m (5 feet). 576p is harder to tell (it is noticeably better than 480p).

With XBMC Eden coming out soon it looks likely that 10-bit decoding will be integrated into the XBMC trunk sometime in the next few months - maybe in time for the next season. Whether or not my E2140-based HTPC will be capable of software-decoded 10-bit 720p will then be the question (it should so long as XBMC also manages to use the ffmpeg multithreaded capabilities).

Last season I just resigned myself to transcoding nearly everything to 8-bit at CRF 20 (with Handbrake) and very high quality settings. My i7 860 transcoded at approx 30FPS, generally producing files at the same or smaller size as the 10-bit encodes, with SSIM of >0.993 in most cases. That's much much less distinguishable than the difference between 480p and 720p.
afun@Ulrezaj
> There are comparisons everywhere that you can find with a quick google, but here's one that demonstrates how much better it is: http://screenshotcomparison.com/comparison/66317
If the source have banding then the encode will have it too, unless you don't use filters. This demonstration is not correct.

> People who can software decode 8bit 720 can handle 10bit 720 perfectly fine unless their cpu was on the verge of barely able to handle it at 100% to begin with.
You forgeting mobile users who watch anime on tablets and netbooks.
Tablets can only decode with hardware support.
Some netbooks can decode 10bit source using software decoding but it noticebly decreasing battery life.

> We had some 400MB+ releases for haganai.
If you want to decrease the file size you can encode OP and ED with different crf quality. And why you encode with crf=18? 19-20 would be enough i think.
Anyway who cares about the file size for ongoing? If you like a series then you will download BD rip with bigger file size than TV rip anyway.
SR@Ulrezaj

You are still leaving out XBMC, which is the most popular player used in HTPCs. Hardly insignificant.

The CPU decoding difference between 8-bit and 10-bit can be very significant in cases where 8-bit was hardware decoded.

And yes, there is a significant difference between 480p and 720p on my 46 inch 1080p TV. Hell even with my previous TV (27 inch) it was still noticeable.

@RS

Your blabbering ad hominem attacks are hilarious. You are so cute. Come back when you have anything smart to say.
Dark_PrideTo those who want to watch 8-bit: Why don't you try Kanjouteki's re-encodes. They're hardsubbed and in mp4, but 720p. I was hoping for Mazui to retain 480p SD since I can't play 720p (irregardless of being 8bit or 10bit). But if Mazui will be doing 3 releases (10-bit, 8-bit 720p and SD) for the cost of some small delay (like a 1-4 day delay), then that would be the best. I'm pretty sure that those who watch SD releases are patient enough to wait, right?

cyrienepeople complaining that 10bit should not be used untill its a common format but it will never be a commmon format if no one uses it yet so deal with what fansubbers provide. well better desktops cpu and laptops are getting cheaper now it just depends how attached or poor u are to get a new one
TimActually, 10-bit h.264 is unlikely to ever be a common format. It's much more likely that HEVC (AKA h.265) will become the next commonly-implemented format.
PedroWherez my 5th generation ipod classic compatible encode you fuckers? What's that you say? I could re-encode it myself to satisfy my minority needs? Awesome, thanks!
cmqThank You Guys, Kill me baby is nice and hilarious. Video quality is nice too, 10 bits quality is just awesome

ISHYGDDT
Oral-Bcyriene and others: I don't think anyone here asked for 10-bit encodes to be dropped altogether, and yes, we *DO* get that 10-bit has advantages over 8-bit -- we're simply asking Mazui to consider an extra 8-bit release for those of us who are stuck with a XBMC setup/nettop/PS3/tablet/whatever that can not be simply upgraded to "the latest CCCP". Nothing more, nothing less.
A.Crush8-bit 720p .mp4 would be better.
Someone ElseHere we go again...Arguments in internet is nothing, you can re-encode btw from 10bit to 8bit using commie's method they provided which I did in this episode, but I hope I didn't have to do that in the future because it takes so long and eats my computer's cpu and makes it unusable (yeah I'm poor), but hell who am I to complain when fansubbers do the same anyway? I guess I'm stuck again to 8bit hunt just like my old Xvid hunts
Sum_of_ThunderAnother long-time fan cast adrift back into the web to find a 720p encode his hardware can manage. And my compliments to whoever made the punishment mp4. It takes real skill and malice to make any encode look that crappy.

Who doesn't have unlimited bandwidth or hard drive space, doesn't have fast enough computer for 10bit to begin with. New hard drive is much cheaper than new PC.

I'm not sure why.

How about netbooks or already mentioned tablet PC? EeePC 701 can't handle even 8bit 720.

TimFinally got enough shows for the new season to make an afternoon of it ...

Unfortunately, Kill Me Baby didn't get a single laugh out of me. That's a bad sign for a show that's meant to be purely comedy. If that doesn't change in the next episode or two it'll end up dropped.

It's a shame that Mazui isn't but this is a way to get your 8bit anime fix.

HTPCFanThe problem with 10bit isn't having a PC that can play it. Many people have HTPCs or media player devices that can playback MKVs just fine; however, they can't play 10bit content.

Yes it would be possible hook a real PC up to my display, but I'll just take the 3 minutes to reencode the file. Quality looks about the same and file size dropped from 220MB to 215MB.

If you like watching anime on a little display as your computer fan is whirling have fun. I'll watch on my silent HTPC outputting to a projector with a 120" screen.
SteveThis is... weird as hell. I don't know if I'll keep watching it, but thanks for subbing as always!
