Hyouka 09
Hyouka episode 9 brings us more ridiculously cute and plastered Chitanda. The Hyouka books are being translated over at Baka-Tsuki but I challenge you to figure out the mystery without reading ahead. Have fun!
Hyouka episode 9: 720p | 480p
If you haven't already, I highly recommend checking out the radio broadcasts for the show. They're very entertaining (if you understand moon) and still very cute if you don't.
Here's the first one:

And thank for sharing the podcast! Haha, I love the seiyuu! :D
I'm going to do a quick re-read of the stories listed (In the first bit where Chitanda shows him the lists of stories) but I think I understand it. The amount of blood needed was a bit of a give away. Also, Shame on that props master, what a jerk.
Argh! I wish it was next week already so I can see if my theory is correct. This anime is awesome, thank you for subbing it, and thank you so much for translating the script! Not many sub groups would do that so thank you!
Getting drunk off of alcohol -> No good
Getting drunk off of "juice" -> Okay!
Getting drunk off of whiskey chocolates -> Okay!
If it was a murder, I can only think of one person.
The sign of the episode's title isn't translated and around 21:27 it's like the audio and video aren't syncronized or something like that.
Thanks for the release btw.
720p 8-bit ftw
Awww.... and painting the house was going so well, too!

Will be up tomorrow as usual. :-)
Maybe I can write a script to monitor this page (or Nyaa), grab torrents beginning with [Mazui], download them, run a compression after it finishes, and upload... has anyone done this? N-not that I'd want to go that far or anything!!
Tomorrow as in the next few hours, I hope?
Actually I thought that's how re-encoders were doing it already. At least the ones doing a lot of different shows that somehow managed to release a re-encode not even an hour after the original release.
If you're doing all of Mazui's and UTW's releases, then that might be the way to go.
If nothing else, there might be a way into the room without going through the "normal" means, kill him, then disappear all the same...
But alas, I am but a humble viewer... I'LL LET THE ANSWER ENTER MY BRAIN!
Thanks for the episode! THIS IS AN AWESOME SERIES!
Have a good night! You guys most definitely deserve it! CIAO FOR NOW!
On to the situation, the others can't have went through the lobby, cos they would've been seen, and the window isn't part of it.
Maybe the victim and another person could hear eachother past the blocked hallway and decided to see if they could reach eachother with the rope or somethin, and somethin goes wrong.
Maybe the blocked doorway became blocked because of an accident that chopped his arm off, and the rope was used in some way.
also, the suicide theory ppl mention would be a bit anticlimactic if u ask me.
OR maybe the hand was a prop, it was prank and hes gonna go 'trololol', then the others hang him for trolling. seriously though, i hope its gonna have an awesome solution.
Everything I saw in this episode seemed to confirm my initial theory. Might just be confirmation bias though.
The first 7 episodes seemed to set the show up as being more about the characters and relationships than pure mystery solving. I'd be surprised if the resolution to this arc was simply figuring out who Hongou had in mind as the killer.
Awesome job guys :)
Kounosu Yuri is my main suspect.
Chapter 8 observations:
-She is silent but in reality she's leading them all the way along.
-She suggested entering the mansion. Although upon entering she said: "I've got a bad feeling about this." (08:50)
-She "realised" of the floor map and knew of the keys.
-She picked the key just after Kaitou did, she also distributed the keys on the table, so she could have done it in such a position everyone would naturally pick the one closest to them.
-When the group divided to scout, only Kounosu and Kaitou were really alone. The others were accompained.
-When they saw Kaitou lying on the floor, Kounosu had no reaction at all.
Chapter 9 observations:
-Nakajou and Sawakiguchi theories went against Knox/Chandler/Van Dine rules.
-Nakajou said: "Come to think of it, I remember her saying "Good luck!" or something to Kounosu" (02:57), when asked if Hongou mentioned who would be the culprit.
-Houtarou rejected fleeing through the window crossing the grass as the culprit had a risk to be seen.
-The real "Watson" is Haba Tomohiro, the props master. He observed that nobody could access the master key during the crime time period, and that the first floor right wing couldn't be accessed through the main hall (there is a risk of being seen). Also, Hongou told him to find a rope someone could hang off and wouldn't break. Therefore, he proposed that Kounosu, who was in the Rock Climbing Club (dunno if this info is known to the viewers, it certainly isn't included in the footage), accessed the first floor from the second floor.
-Houtarou rejected this theory because it was unpractical to open the window of the locked room.
My theory:
Kounosu, being in the same wing as Kaitou, is the physically closest person. She descended from the right side wall of the mansion where nobody else could see her, and entered the dressing room which had open/broken windows (seen from footage). From there, Kaitou would have opened the "locked" room and would be inspecting it, so Kounosu only had to enter through the open door and commit the crime. I have no explanation for the absence of screams or Kaitou's sliced off arm, nor the blood amount inconsistencies between the footage and the original script. After commiting the crime, Kounosu would lock the room from the inside and escape through the window without crossing the grass but sidestepping back-against-the-walls, so it'd be a dead angle for anyone who would casually look through the windows, until she reaches the right mansion wall where her rope is.
You got my attention
> (if you understand moon)
WELP, nothing to do here!
Chii-chan does NOT say "I am Chow". She says "Ciao desu" as reply to "Ciao" greeting from Sawakiguchi-san.
One of the people followed the guy who was going to be killed in the room he was heading to, killed him, cut his arm, took his key, put his own key on the floor near the hand, went out of the room, close the room and joined the others.
@all: Episode 9 (small 8-bit 720p MP4) is up! Should work on all devices that support 4.0 (which is almost everything these days). http://www.mediafire.com/?mv7jv2zm214hg
I'm not that great at explaining but this is what I think.
@anonymous
I'll have to disagree with your theory. If this story does follow those rules/commandments then Kounosu Yuri is not the culprit but she is the detective. The culprit is Sugimura Jirou.
Episode 8:
-Jirou is leading everyone (to the village). Someone asks him how much longer. His response is 5 minutes, as it was 5 minutes ago.
-Yuri says "I have a bad feeling about this." I think the detective, with naturally high instincts, would say this rather than the murder.
-Yuri finds the map and knows the keys would be in the office (smart like a detective).
-Jirou is the only one to follow her and see the master key.
-Jirou is the only one with no alibi during the crime.
-When everyone gathers together after searching the rooms Jirou is late, maybe mentally preparing himself?
Not in the movie;
-We see 4 people from the class. They also resemble the actors in the movie.
-Eba Kurako, the girl who resembles Yuri, says her Hongou is her best friend. More reason to have Yuri the detective.
My theory:
If you pay attention to the areas they separated to and the floor map you'll see this: From the top view. Takeo and Mamiko first floor left. Kaitou first floor right. Jirou and Midori second floor left, Yuri second floor right.
The main hall, in the center of the building, is blocked its main entrance and Kaito's room. However it maybe open at all other entrances.
Yuri checked her room and went to see the main hall from the second floor.
Midori checked her room and went to see the main hall from the second floor.
Takeo and Mamiko checked their rooms and went to see the main hall from the first floor. They each saw the others from the own view points. Jirou had only 1 room to check, which he said was fairly clean. So really it only took him a few seconds to see the room and its condition.
It goes like this... Jirou steals the master key when Yuri turns around. He checks his room, luckily to find it clean. He waits a while for the others to get further back in the building so he won't be seen. Then he heads over to Kaitou (we can see Kaito checked the first 2 rooms already cause they're unlocked) and kills him (sorry can't explain (don't know how)). He heads back and puts the master key back in its place. He prepares himself and waits for the others.
Thanks for the re-encode, both this and Apollon, I start stalking your Apollon page the moment I see the commie release up, btw. Btw, you ripped it at the karaoke last week. Props!!
I agree with your theory that it is Sugimura Jirou. Actually you seem to have rewatched episode 8 to review the details so I trust your judgement.
However you are wrong in the fact that he came back to take the master key. As I explained before there is no need for that, he could have just followed Kaito, killed him, took his key, put his own key on the floor near the hand, no one would think to check if it is the key on the ground right key for the room. Then he could just lock the door behind him and join the other.
Just in case you might ask : I didn't read the light novel, just thought about it by myself.
For the mystery itself:
I don't even try solving it because I find it pretty lame. The killed guy is the tallest and sportiest. It's just illogical that one of the others could cut his hand off without him running away or trying to resist/screaming.
Additionally there are so many vague factors included like the rope, the relation with Hongou and their skills. If you count them all together there are many ways this could have happened which are all plausible.
I'm more curious about Hongou.
