Spicey ep 12 patch
And here's the inevitable v2 with editing fixes, and without any easter eggs :)
v2 torrent and patch-only download.
For those who didn't notice, v1 has staff names hidden in the episode. Try find them if you're bored!
I know some of you weren't entirely pleased with their addition into the episode, but hey, we do this for fun, and if we get bored, subs stop happening, so cut us some slack every now and then. Besides, we wouldn't be Mazui if we didn't piss off someone with every release :P
With the series completed, we're releasing the scripts for anyone to do with as they wish. They can be found at the newly-christened scripts page.
And since all the comments for this ep have more or less already been made, I'm turning this post into a S&W Q&A session. Ask anything you want about the contents of the anime and I'll do my best to answer them.

my group has a parody on the credits page with all the speech replaced with something funny every release tho
Always have fun... and if that's what it takes, then Easter Egg Away.

Also do want novels
dont worry about those ppl who get pissed off about easter eggs etc.
no sense of humor for them.
as long as quality and subbing isnt affected - your good :)
about the guy who said easter eggs are invisible without 100% contrast/brightness - not true. i dont have 100% contrast.
keep up the good work mazui, cheers from Israel :)
I love Easter eggs but absolutely hated these and am glad Mazui released a patch and v2. That part you said about "as long as quality and subbing isn't affected"? Yeah, if the subs and Easter eggs actually distract from the story itself--during the climax of the series no less--it's definitely NOT good.
And just because you don't have 100% contrast or the equivalent doesn't mean other people don't. Got it on my LCD monitor, graphic card offers it, and my HDTV and old CRT TV have the equivalent.
Of course, I'll be fair--the exact converse of your statement can potentially be just as incorrect.
Anyway, thanks again to Mazui for releasing the fix and great job on the series overall!
If this is really a Q&A then i was wondering about something back in episode 7. When horo falls on lawrence and embarrasses him. Ive been watching the mazui subs back to back with the frostii ones and was having trouble choosing which to keep.. the mazui marring of the last epp had me going with frostii, but now i dont know. frostii does have that annoying logo on the top right
anyway in ep 7 the part where horo falls on lawrence going down the stairs the lines are something like this:
H: So when are you going to start panicking?
L: I wonder. Maybe when you stop doing things like this?
H: You've developed quite a sharp wit.
L: Haven't I?
H: You really have become quite the smooth talker. Did you get someone to teach you?
L: No. It just came to me at the moment.
H: At the moment? That makes me even happier. When I stop doing things like this, you said? *leans against lawrence*
the frostii release is almost the same
h: when are you going to start panicking?
L: Well, when you stop doing these things, i guess.
H: your wit has gotten quicker
L: of course
H: You've really been getting better with words. Did someone teach you?
L: No, it just came to me out of the blue
H: out of the blue? Thats even better!.. If i stop doing anything, hu? *leans against lawrence he gets embaresed when he realizes something*
pretty much the same intent in both versions, but i still cant figure what the hell is going on. I dont think its a translation issue, can you guys or anyone else clarify what the hells going on, what shes talking about and why he gets so embarrassed? That parts always bugged me =P
It would have been more amusing if you said didn't leave a bad taste in your mouth. But then it would be making bad puns like the Spicy writers.
Could you give more examples? Right now I'm inclined to say that there hasn't been a major shift in which gender abuses Lawrence - the guy just gets abused (both in the physical and the business sense). It's one of the few options this series has for creating conflict and subsequently pushing the brief arcs forward. I mean, let's face it, Spice and Wolf isn't exactly action-packed and they can only do the giant wolf bit so often, so any opportunity to get some sort of suspense is probably a welcome one.
Apart from the bar maid, I'm not seeing a whole lot more touchy-feely behavior from the other women apart from Horo's flirting. Maybe our criteria are different?
you can still see them with 100% on both.
maybe your screen(s) is(are) defected.
I think you and Christy74 are talking about two diffrent things. It looks like you misinterpreted the earlier post about 100% brightness and contrast. That anonymous was talking about making his or her own subs almost invisible, not the easter eggs in the mazui release.
As for abuse... I guess the reason I picked on the girls a little is because it has a slight harem aire to it. There's not too many situations that involve Lawrence and abuse from guys because his transactions with them are of the business variety.
But from the girls... let's see
Horo = Jabbing, stomping, and kicking [that should be obvious from the Mazui spoof]
Chloe = Seduction, assault
Bar maid = Seduction
Abe = Assault
What I mean to point out is Lawrence's character is a masochist. So he's going to take a beating and mostly from the girls who want to give it to him. He won't take the same shit from guys. But ain't that like RL.
The stairway scene in ep 7:
Lawrence basically says "I'll start panicking when you start ignoring me." So he's saying he wants her attention. The point at which she repeats it is when he realizes how embarassing that is to say.
Abuse:
Chloe doesn't exist in the books, so she doesn't really count. Horo's abuse is part of their relationship, and she never really has the intention of hurting him. Abe's abuse was actually brought upon by himself since he called her out on the deal. She would have been perfectly willing to carry through the deal to the end peacefully with Lawrence if he hadn't confronted her.
somethings been bugging me about ep 12. it wrapped up well but the scene near the beginning confused me a lot.
heres the transcription
L: if the deal goes well and i become a successful merchant, you'll congratulate me then bid me farewell. And if the deal goes bad, you wouldn't stand being sold, so you'd transform into a wolf and abandon your useless companion so you could return home.
In other words, the only way i can continue traveling with you is to throw away this chance. Im sure your going to tell me, "Dont throw it all away--
H: "--just to gamble on a single thread of hope"
L:"Thats why i didn't want to say"
H:is that what you really think?
L: yes
H: that id be happy with that?
L:yes
*Horo slaps lawrence starts trembling*
H: I wont say im happy. But i definitely wont say im sorry
L: With this, our chances of traveling together any farther have completely vanished. This is what you wished for, right?
*Horo looks very hurt/sad opens mouth to say something*
H: I will remember you as a c alculating, cool-headed merchant
L: shall we go?
*they get to the place they will sell her for colateral horo is crying*
H: if there is an all powerfull god like they say, why does he let us suffer so much?
ok.. now to me the conversation at the start seems to be him pointing out that any way the deal goes he will lose Horo, so he really would rather just not go through with the deal. In fact it seems thats been his position on it from the start. He wants to throw it all away to still travel with her. i THINK thats what he means by throw it all away to gamble on a string of hope. Is that right?
the part that confuses the hell outa me is when she gets pissed and slaps him and angrily asks if he thinks shed be happy with that. His reply confuse me, he basically says that he will go with the deal and they will soon say goodbye, claiming its what she wants. which is in direct conflict with what he was saying near the start. Did her slap change his mind? what was she really thinking? this scene seriously confused me, i don't get the intent at all. If she really was mad at him for wanting to stick with her then why did she get so upset when he said they would go ahead and part ways, and why was she crying by the time they reached the merchants?
i think her thoughts were just conflicting (you know how it is with those types of characters). she wants him to go on with the plan, but at the same time she doesnt want to part ways with him, however, since shes a deity, she knows if she gets to emotionally close to Lawrence, the amount of time they have together will be a minuscule amount in her point of view.
thats what i got out of it.
H: if there is an all powerfull god like they say, why does he let us suffer so much?
really has me confused. If she really wants to end it there and thinks thats for the best whats with her body language there and especially the coment at the end.
What's implied in the second half of that conversation, but not so well done in the anime, is how Lawrence is implying that he's doing it because *she* wants him to. Which is true, but he's making it seem as though it's her wish and he's just following it. Obviously that's not the case, and she's thinking about his well-being (his dream) but the way he's going along with it makes it seem he's just doing what she wants - "This is what you wished for, right?" - he's rubbing salt into the wound. Horo slaps him because she knows that he knows that isn't really what's happening here, but chose to rub her words in anyway.
Hence, "I won't say I'm happy" - she's doing this for his sake, but she doesn't want it either, and "but I definitely won't say I'm sorry" - she's not going to apologize for what she's making him do because she knows it's for his future.
Regarding the stairwell scene:
Oh man, how to explain this.
All of the dialog between the two is structured in the way that's it's a battle for each of them to see who can seduce the other with which ever side admitting they like the other being branded the "loser."
Lawrence lost on the stairwell because he admitted his statements are his feelings.
In any case.. what's next Mazui?
There should be a comment in the previous post that lists the times. Also, since you actually want to see these easter eggs, be sure that you downloaded the first version of the episode and not the patched version.
actually discovered a few things myself, like Chloe not being in the originals
@BashZeStampeedo
So everyone must contribute to cause or not be allowed to criticize? That logic does not work or else no one ever be allowed to not like bad TV shows or movies. Let alone government, food, music, literature, anything.
I very very much disliked these easter eggs and others did too. Mazui staff made mistake but fixed it and handled the situation well. They could have made it another Internet shouting fight but did not, so I have great respect for that. I hope they don't stop having fun and easter eggs but should be much more careful of where to hide and hide them well-- as easter eggs should be. :D
See, this is what happens when you treat everything as SERIOUS BUSINESS and can't take a joke :)
Criticize away, because you are at least expressing your thanks.. I respect that. I just get upset at the Internet hate machine that only lives to whine at the people entertaining it for free..
Amazing jobs on everything this year! Can't tell you how much we all appreciate your insta-subs. Also, I found jama!
@Gregor
......plz be trolling..>_>
@BashZeStampeedo
srs bsns XP
Yeah, but your joke doesn't exactly come across as a joke. Your second paragraph in your second comment even gives reason to believe that you were serious. Not saying I don't get seriously annoyed with some people that whine all the time, but chalk me up as another that didn't catch your joke. :-/
@Anon
Um, no. I agree with Gregor. Maybe he went a bit too SRS BSNS but I hear the "oh, so you think X sucks? Let's see you do better!" BS line way too often and also thought that's what Bash was saying. Apparently not, but it's one of those things that rank right up there with the whining that pisses us all off.
Anyway, this Q&A thread was a very good idea since there's so much reading between the lines of the banter.
Haha, that ended up being longer than I expected. Methinks the SERIOUS BUSINESS has infected the thread. We need to start a new one, STAT!
I'll try to be more obvious in the future, thanks for the tip. When you hang around extremely sarcastic people on the Internets 24/7 you tend to become more blunt than you realize.
It's totally cool. I think every single person on the internet gets caught up with that issue at least once a year. Goddamn text messages and their ambiguity! >:O
And I just want to restate again that this Q&A thread was awesome.
Check the comments section in the previous post. There should be times in a couple of the comments there.
You don't think they'll do volume 4 of the light novels (which they skipped so far)?
