Boku Ha Tomodachi Ga Sukunai 01

Yay real 720p! One thing you can't fault this show for is its prettiness. Then again, it is AIC. My internet is being dumb (had to do most of this show through RDP) so the did you know will come later, but here's episode 1 of haganai!

Episode 1 and the XviD

It's 8bit, thankfully.

CrusherXI would prefer 10bit too. Thanks MAZUI team!

SporranThanks. Also glad it's 8-bit. My poor old processor can't take 10-bit very well, and my TV box can't play it at all.
RiderBoku ha? you got to be kidding me. I'm fluent japanese and thats obviously wrong. Its boku wa.
u mad?
phdr_vrbaphew, 8-bit. Thanks a lot for that.

Since 10bit videos can't be hw accelerated so far, I am getting pretty much screwed this season. I mean, try to watch 10bit 720p stuff when old Atom CPU has to do the encoding... Even my cellphone does beter job there >_>
IndexBEAUTIFUL!
deadman80Rider: Blame the creator/producers of this show then since that appears to be the official romanized title. ^^;;

CitrusThank you for NOT doing this in 10-bit. Half of us still don't have a way to deal with the format.

Geese1Thanks - been waiting on this one!
anonymousReleasing in 10 bit does not change that most sources are 8bit, unless it's blu-ray releases and not all of those either. Going from 8bit-10bit does not improve quality. That was the fruits of my research, and it does have proof so far based on tests.
sneezlSince I rely on GPU acceleration for HD viewing, thank you for the 8bit release.
Dubz> mfw i saw this on nyaa.

i missed you, mazui.
anonymous> xvid
How about you use that time to do 10-bit
franz> xvid
> no 10-bit

how's that luddite thing working out for you, mazui?
fncd@anon: Your research was pretty shit then.
dgkDon't listen to these haters Mazui. Even though I go with the mkv, there's a lot more people out there that appreciate an xvid release than a 10-bit one.

Thanks you guys.
Meat loverThanks for the meat! :D
KalAwesome! nice to have you guys back in the action. Thanks for the release!
limabeanThanks guys.

@rider
read the comment thread for the OVA
Nofriends-kunhow can this be 720p and 280mb at this image quality?

Well done...
Usually 720p gets stretched and blurried on my full HD screen, but this one looks looks very good.

Is this because of the quality of the source or are you guys the masters of encoding?

either way, thanks for the hard work.

GO SUCK 10bitCOCKS you elitist faggots of no remorse.

You poor, brah?
XenoperiThanks Folks
CarVacI'd rather it be 10-bit encoded (more quality = ALWAYS better), but the show's palette (few dark gradients) and lack of crazy noise effects make it somewhat less necessary than with other shows.
MoonieThanks for going 8 bit, I use hardware acceleration, so I am sunk on all these pointlessly hi10P releases.

For all the "more quality" comments.. if the source is 8 bit, what's the point? It cannot rise above the source, unless the point is to screw over the many people that can't use it.
MoonieOh... and this show has promise. I will tune back in next week! Thanks!
macxxx007BAD-ASS!

Thanks so much for the episode! YOU HAVE MY THANKS!
miwangI, for one, support 10bit releases. However, since a lot of people still can't use 10bit decoding for whatever reason they might have, an 8bit and 10bit release would be great.

Thanks for the ep Mazui.
anonymousTaking any 8 bit stream and packaging it as 10 bit does not increase quality or decrease size. Or anything. If product was made originally in 10 bit, then 10 bit makes sense. If product was made in 8 bit. You can upscale to 10 bit with no benefit, it's still an 8 bit stream (256) in 10 bit language(1000). Nothing is added. But then again, it's like the next best iPod. Most aired TV is 8 bit still, even HD content. Though in the future 10 bit will be more universal, but at that point, people will be doing the same thing for 12 bit that we are seeing in 10 bit.
AkureiAll I know is #3. OTONASHI!!!!
AkureiNo no!! my bad it's Hinata. I think -______-
XerBladeThe one real reason I might like this in 10 bit is for reduced file size. With all the good shows out this season (compared to the complete suckage that was last season), my hard drives are going to be stretched to their limits by season's end....

And the few people saying shit about how converting an 8 bit to 10 bit has no advantage, and even going as far as to say it doesn't reduce filesize (wait, based on what?), they obviously are basing that on just conventional logic (except the filesize part, that's just stupid no matter how you look at it) and have no actual knowledge of how encoding really works (says the computer engineer who just spent 7 hours straight yesterday encoding videos and shit.. yeah I know I seem to have no life lately).
stopretty please leave it at 8 bit so i can stream it to my tv =]]

lovely to see you guys back in action subbing a quality show as always!
MahaiOneBuy a fucking HDMI cable if you want to watch it on your TV, plastic toys are retarded.
ReviewerThe anime doesn't match up with the manga.

This usually happens all the time.
The anime is greatly detailed and designed.

But, sadly lacking the comedy features that are suppose to come with the ugly faces the characters make.
I didn't smile one bit watching this.
It should have comedy removed from the genre for this anime and leave only the romance. Considering that most people are not gonna be impressed when they see this and compare it to the manga.
Great subs though, too bad they couldn't stick with making the characters have a lot of depth in exaggerated emotion.
thewizardninjaLook at all these idiots who don't know how 10-bit encoding works. It DOESN'T MATTER if the TS is 8-bit, encoding from the TS using 10-bit encoding methods rather than using 8-bit encoding methods reduces banding and file-size. That is a FACT and trying to dispute that only makes you look like an idiot.

I'm actually find some magical ways of running 720p stuff here, but it's always nice to get something that's guaranteed to work. Thank you so much.

and yeah I'll eventually get a new computer geez
D_P@The same guy as before: Yeah, it's always nice to have something that's compatible with as many players as possible. I would like to thank Mazui this release.
KnallI haven't really watched much anime lately, but i'm going to watch this solely because ure subbing it.
Star ZeroExcuse me! Mazui!
I am a member of fansub group in Vietnamese, I want to use your sub in this project to translate into my language to share with other member who can't read English at my site.
Could I have permission to use your sub for my project?
Of course your credit will be kept. I will make sure them appear at the topic and at the start of each episodes. Beside that, I would also gladly do everything else you want.
Thank for reading.
Please answer as soon as you can.
KurisuThanks a lot for this show! It seems fun and your release is very good as well.
delphinenThanks for what seems to be another awesome show Mazui.
Also, thanks for NOT jumping into the 10bit faggotry. People with older machines really appreciate it.

OverlordNice to see you back in action, Mazui. We missed you last season.

This show is amusing, and the subs are flawless as per usual. Keep up the good work.
njamunkyi for one welcome our 10-bit overloards
KaiserXIIIRider: I know it's strange that it's 'Boku ha' instead of the usual 'Boku wa', but the original source material even goes as far as to nickname it 'haganai'.
bt37cheers Mazui! looks to be an interesting show, and once again top notch subbing
CarVac@Reviewer

This is not based on a manga. It's based on a light novel series, which the manga is also an adaptation of.
JulioThanks Mazui! Glad it's 8-bit even though my new computer with a Quad Core processor can handle up to 10-bit 1080p.
asdfgwho's the guy on the middle?
D_Plol at 10-bit vs. 8-bit wars. I have no problem with 10-bit, but completely abandoning 8-bit or even SD releases just to cater to the "elite" pirates is retarded.
fanThanks Mauzi!
fotcI would give a nonexistent prize to whoever can do the DYK.

Good luck.

Mithgol the WebmasterThank you for providing us a 8bit file. My CPU is not dual-core, and thus I have to rely on DXVA hardware acceleration for anything 720p or 1080p.

anon something something *add number here*@Rider
the character for"ha" is considered a particle in japanese. i dont know why, it just is. so when you say "boku wa" you still use the character "ha" even though it's pronounced different. the particle is supposed to identify the topic.
cheezeburgerzI'm excited for the next episode!! :D
AnonymousThank you very much for the subtitling!

(For those in the ha/wa discussion: As noted, it depends whether you're romanising Japanese as it's spoken or as it's written. I personally prefer a direct conversion from the written mora, but I can understand why there could be disagreement.)

Possible subtitle correction/alteration suggestions:

19:23, "Kono atashi ga nyuubu shite ageru tte itteiru no ni!", spoken as though joining the club would be doing a favour (I think?).

19:30, "'Tomodachi boushuu' tte poster mitekita ndakara!": Revelation, causing Yozara's surprise at 19:32, that Sena was able to read the diagonal 'Tomodachi boushuu' message (predicted as noticable only by those desperately looking for friends). Currently the quoted part is cut out in the subtitle, indicating only that she saw the poster and not addressing the message.

20:07: "watashi no suukou na keikaku no haeru ikenie ichigou ni natte moraou ka", 'Maybe I should have you become my noble plan's first sacrifice.'(/'Perhaps I should have you becom the first sacrifice for my noble plan.'), currently subtitled as 'Perhaps I should adopt that as the first item on my master plan--' (a less direct threat).
('noble'/'lofty'/'sublime' interchangable for suukou.)

20:24, 'dousei' (same sex, translated correctly earlier) currently subtitled as 'in the same year'.
anonymousFirst off, 8-bit banding can be avoided with proper encode, some studies even go far as to say that banding is created by the display, I have never had banding unless it was a bad encode. Second, 10-bit encodes use 30% more bandwidth to obtain the same function unless you use higher compression ratios when making them. Third, 8bit is compatible with more systems, and more content is released in 8-bit then 10-bit. Also 8-bit is easier to stream to subsystems like PS3 and Xbox360. Mind you, if the content is 10bit, I say keep it 10-bit. If it's 8-bit, I would prefer it 8-bit so I don't have to sit in front of my PC to watch anime and can watch it on my TV downstairs. But inevitably, I just want to have quality, if quality is produced can be provided in 10-bit. I am ok with it. Also, I get some bad banding on color pallets from some 10-bit encodes. But once again, it's how it's handled that makes it good or bad, 10-bit does offer more room to work with in its encodes so a better jobs may be able to happen, just at the sacrifice of the size being larger.
Anonymous((Ack, 'boshuu' rather than 'boushuu'.))
adam326Yay, Maziu back in the turf!

Thanks for the release!

And now some response ranting:

anon above said:
'First off, 8-bit banding can be avoided with proper encode, some studies even go far as to say that banding is created by the display, I have never had banding unless it was a bad encode.'
I'm not sure what is the point in here. It may be true that there are displays that smoothen banding an make it less standing out (especially TV screens, they smoothens pictures quite wildly), but they smoothen sharp egdes too which is bad. Technically, it's NOT displays problem. If you see bands that means your display is sharp(which is good), but the image sucks and should have been done better. Then again, Hi10p is just one of the encodes that happens to make better dithering than standard h264 8bit profile.

'Second, 10-bit encodes use 30% more bandwidth to obtain the same function unless you use higher compression ratios when making them.'
Unless you are talking about something different, I'm pretty sure both 8-bit and 10-bit uses same 32 bits for color. Only difference in this matter is size of alpha channel (8 bits in 8-bit and 2 bits in 10-bit), which is usually not used in movies. Moreover, +2 bits means more accuracy, which means smaller errors, which means more consecutive frames can be encoded with same quality, which means smaller files. This is fact.

'Third, 8bit is compatible with more systems, and more content is released in 8-bit then 10-bit.'
They said the same about XviD and h264 a few years ago.

I'm not saying that 8-bit encode is bad. It's main good side is that it works efficiently even on older computers (and yes, you're right about compatibility with consoles and other non-pc hardware). I just say that if someone wants to argue about technical stuff, this someone should read and know more about technical stuff.
Dr. Shenanigans Cool, thanks for the release...btw, is Mazui planning to pick up Mirai Nikki? You guys did the OVA, and the series has started airing, so I was curious.
ErrorYou guys gonna do Mirai Nikki too???
thx for the release ^^

Immense FaggotWasn't Yozora harsher towards Kodaka at the start in the novels? Guess they just toned down the insults for the anime.
Good start, anyways. And Yozora has dat hair and dem thigh(high)s. I like.
Thanks for your continued hard work, Mazui.
Jindo90Mirai Nikki? Mirai Nikki where?
anonymous@adam326 I can say that using a 10-bit encoder does help fend off rounding errors even if the output is still 8-bit. But it doesn't change the quality or fix the original rounding errors that may have transpired already.
jindo90I heard Mirai Nikki is simulcasted...

You can't do that after putting up Mirai Nikki on the projects tab of the site for so long. So dissapointing. The project was a lie!
njamunkynext ep!
anonymousI would also prefer a Mirai Nikki release from Mazui. I feel as though I could only trust Mazui to do the project right. *so far has been watching the raw, but would like supplemental subtitles from a respected source.*
